H&W|Who’s Experiencing Stiffness

Why Do We Get Stiff As We Age?

As I age, I definitely realize that my body gets stiff when I stay in one position for too long.

If I lie on my back too long, my knees almost feel locked when I try to move again. If I sit too long, my hips and legs need a little encouragement before standing up comfortably.

This is one of those conversations I remember hearing older adults talk about when I was younger.

Now that I’m an elder myself… my peers and I laugh and compare notes about:
“Why are we so stiff getting up?”
“Why do our bodies act like this after sitting too long?”
“Why does it take a minute to straighten up?” 😭😁

But honestly, there is a real reason behind it.

As we age, our joints, muscles, and connective tissues naturally change over time.

One of the biggest reasons we feel stiff is because the fluid that lubricates our joints slowly decreases with age. That fluid is called synovial fluid, and it acts like oil for the body’s moving parts. When we stay still too long, the fluid settles, which is why stiffness is often worse:

  • first thing in the morning
  • after sitting for a long time
  • after lying down too long
  • after long car rides
  • or after inactivity

Our cartilage also changes as we age.

Cartilage is the protective cushion between our bones. Over time it becomes thinner and less flexible, which can make movement feel tighter or less smooth.

Then there are our muscles and tendons.

As we age, muscles naturally lose mass and strength if we do not actively maintain them. Tendons and ligaments also lose some elasticity, which means our bodies do not “bounce back” the same way they did when we were 25 years old. 😁

But here’s the interesting part…

Experts say that many age-related stiffness issues are not just from aging itself, but also from lack of movement.

Movement helps circulate joint fluid.
Movement helps muscles stay active.
Movement helps maintain flexibility.
Movement keeps the body from “settling into stiffness.”

That does not mean we need to become gym fanatics.

Sometimes gentle movement matters most:

  • walking
  • stretching
  • standing up more often
  • range-of-motion exercises
  • light strengthening
  • yoga
  • tai chi
  • water exercises
  • simply not staying frozen in one position too long

And honestly, as someone currently dealing with pain and mobility challenges myself, I’m learning there is a balance.

Too little movement can make the body tighten up.
Too much strain can also aggravate the body.

Learning how to listen to our bodies becomes more important as we age.

One thing I do know…

Getting older definitely humbles you. 😭

You suddenly understand why your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older coworkers made those little noises standing up from chairs.

Now WE are the people saying:
“Hold on… let me straighten up first.” 🤣

And honestly?
That’s okay too.

Aging may change the body, but it also teaches us patience, awareness, adaptation, and gratitude for movement itself.

So if you’re feeling stiff these days…
you are definitely not alone. 🌻
