Did You Think About Aging When You Were Younger?
Today I have been reflecting on my parents and my Japanese grandmother’s aging process.
As a child and young adult, I saw how they lived. What I did not understand at the time was why they did certain things.
I remember Grandma Matsu sitting often, using her famous smelly patches, and relying on her own collection of remedies. I remember my mother spending time reading, working crossword puzzles, gardening, and enjoying the comfort of home. My father stayed active through church, committees, and community service, but he also used a cane and later a walker.
Looking back, I realize they were adapting to aging and chronic pain, even if they did not fully understand all the medical reasons behind what they were experiencing.
When I thought about aging as a younger woman, I knew two things were probably in my future.
Silver hair.
Arthritis.
The silver hair arrived right on schedule. The arthritis began making itself known in my 40s.
What I cannot tell you is when it began for my parents, grandparents, or siblings. I simply know that arthritis has touched many branches of my family tree.
One thing I have come to appreciate is the time I spent living in Las Vegas.
At the time, I simply enjoyed living there.
Now I realize something else.
I lived with significantly less pain.
As I have aged, I better understand why so many retirees spend winters in warm, dry climates and return to places like the Pacific Northwest during the spring and summer months. Weather affects many people more than we realize.
These reflections have made me curious about other people’s experiences.
Did you think about aging when you were younger?
Do you know your family health history?
Have you inherited some of the same health challenges your parents or grandparents faced?
And for my seasoned soul friends, how is life treating you these days?
I would love to hear your thoughts.
