💛 The Distance Between Health and Home
It’s one thing to talk about access to care — it’s another to witness what that really means.
After another conversation with Kirstin today, I found myself thinking again about the patients who travel hours — sometimes even fly from Alaska — just to receive the care they need at Swedish.
The idea of driving two to five hours through unpredictable weather, over mountain passes, or catching a flight just to see a specialist isn’t something most of us have to think about. Yet for many of our patients, it’s their reality.
It makes you pause and think about the privilege of living close to solid, accessible healthcare. About how distance, time, and resources can quietly shape a person’s health journey before a doctor even sees them.
Closing Reflection:
It’s a reminder — both for patients and for those of us working in healthcare — that proximity can mean everything.
And maybe it’s worth thinking about, as we get older or make choices about where to live:
Are we close enough to the care we may one day need?
