When Did Simply Existing Become Enough?

Somewhere along the way, something changed.

It used to be that people took pride in showing up. Not because someone was watching, but because their name was attached to the work they did.

You showed up because it mattered.

You worked hard because it reflected who you were.

But lately, it feels like something has shifted.

People show up, do what they can, and when things become overwhelming they step away. Standards feel blurred. Responsibility feels lighter. Pride in the work itself seems harder to find.

And it makes you wonder.

When did simply existing become enough?

Now before anyone misunderstands this question, let me be clear.

Life is harder in different ways today. The world moves faster. Technology never shuts off. People are navigating pressures that previous generations didn’t experience in the same way.

But something important may still be missing.

The quiet understanding that effort matters.

Not perfection.

Not burnout.

But effort.

The effort to learn.

The effort to grow.

The effort to take responsibility for the role we step into.

Sometimes I also find myself wondering something else.

Do the generations coming behind us truly want to understand the value of showing up, taking pride in their work, and wanting to excel?

Or has work simply become something we do until the day ends?

Workplaces are shifting. The culture around work is changing. Standards that once felt clear now seem less defined.

And in many spaces, elders are no longer leading in the way they once did. Experience is sometimes pushed aside for speed, technology, or trends.

But wisdom still matters.

Because societies do not move forward on talent alone.

They move forward on people who care enough to do the work with integrity.

Every generation eventually inherits the responsibility to lead.

And leadership does not begin with titles.

It begins with character.

So maybe the real question we should be asking ourselves is this:

Are we preparing the next generation to lead…

or simply teaching them how to exist?

Because the future will be shaped by the answer.
