Real Talk: The Voice You Use vs. The One People Hear

There’s something people don’t think about enough.

Not what you say…

but how you sound when you say it.

Your tone.

Your pace.

Your body language.

Your presence.

Because whether people realize it or not—

they are reacting to that first.

I’ve spent a lifetime being aware of my voice.

How I say something can calm a situation…

or create tension without me even meaning to.

It can build trust.

Or shut someone down.

And the truth is… a lot of people are unaware of how they come across.

Not intentionally.

They just haven’t stopped to hear themselves the way others do.

Back in Vegas, I saw this clearly with two performers who worked together regularly.

One was the full package—engaging, moving, connecting with the audience the moment he stepped on stage.

The other was more reserved. Less movement, not as comfortable speaking in between songs.

But when he sang?

That voice… undeniable.

Both were talented.

Both gave a great experience.

But the way they showed up?

Different.

And people feel that difference—even if they can’t explain it.

I’ve even had conversations with someone I know and respect who is autistic and transgender.

She is very intentional about her voice—how it sounds and how it’s received.

That takes awareness.

That takes effort.

And it made me think…

How many people move through life

without ever asking:

How do I sound to others?

What does my presence feel like in a room?

Because your voice isn’t just sound.

It’s energy.

It’s intention.

It’s impact.

And once you become aware of it…

You can shift it.

Not to change who you are—

but to make sure who you are

is being felt the way you intend.
