A Taste of Flava

The Downfall of Having Too Many Clothes

This morning I found myself staring at six laundry bags full of clean clothes.

Six.

Not one.

Not two.

Six.

Now before you judge me, let me explain.

One of the blessings of working from home is that I don’t have to get dressed up every day. The downside is that when you own enough clothes to outfit a small village, you can go a very long time before laundry becomes an emergency.

Apparently, I have reached that point.

My landlord is doing his annual walk-through on Thursday, and suddenly I am looking around my townhouse seeing things differently.

The laundry bags have become roommates.

I know exactly how this happened.

A shirt here.

A pair of leggings there.

A comfy sweater for chilly mornings.

A sunflower shirt.

A leopard print shirt.

Another sunflower shirt.

Another leopard print shirt.

A few things that I forgot I even owned.

And before you know it, six laundry bags are staring at you from across the room.

The funny thing is that I don’t even leave the house much these days.

You would think I was attending galas, hosting television specials, and traveling internationally based on the amount of clothing I own.

Meanwhile, I spend most of my day in my tower workspace talking to patients, drinking coffee, watching birds, and trying to convince myself to fold laundry.

This morning I debated my strategy.

Do I sit comfortably on the couch and fold laundry while watching TV?

Or do I march into my closet, sit on my chair in there, and start putting everything away immediately?

At my age, and with these hips, every household project now requires a planning committee meeting.

I finally realized something.

The goal is not perfection.

The goal is to make progress.

My landlord isn’t coming to inspect my sock drawer.

He’s making sure I haven’t turned the townhouse into an episode of Hoarders.

So today, I will fold.

I will sort.

I will put away a little at a time.

And somewhere in the process, I will probably rediscover three shirts I forgot I owned and wonder why I haven’t worn them in six months.

The moral of today’s story?

Having lots of clothes sounds wonderful until laundry day arrives.

Then suddenly your wardrobe starts looking less like a fashion collection and more like a part-time job.

Wish me luck.

I have six laundry bags and a landlord coming on Thursday.

Pray for me.
