The Landlord Walk-Through Chronicles

This week I had one mission:

Prepare for the annual landlord walk-through.

Now, if you’re healthy and pain-free, that might not sound like a big deal.

But when you’re dealing with hip pain, back pain, and moving around with a walker, even simple chores can feel like an Olympic event.

For days I looked around my room thinking about everything that needed to be done.

The bathroom needed attention.

The carpet needed scrubbing.

The closet looked like it had been abandoned after a clearance sale.

And let’s not even discuss the collection of jackets living on the back of my office chair. Apparently they had established a permanent residence without my knowledge.

I knew I couldn’t tackle everything at once, so I came up with a plan.

What I didn’t realize was that my multipurpose walker was about to become the MVP of the entire operation.

That walker became my laundry cart, transportation system, sorting station, and personal assistant.

One pile at a time, I worked my way through six bags of laundry.

Leggings.

Sweats.

Jeans.

Black clothes.

Blue clothes.

Gray clothes.

One category at a time.

One break at a time.

One Tylenol at a time.

I also discovered a wonderful invention called “the chair in my closet.”

Instead of standing and suffering, I sat down and put things away.

Was it fast?

Absolutely not.

Was it glamorous?

Not even a little.

But it worked.

By mid-afternoon I was hurting, exhausted, and wondering if my landlord would actually show up.

The original plan was between 5 and 7 PM.

Then came an update.

Closer to 6 to 7 PM.

Then another update.

ETA 7:08 PM.

At that point I had already cleaned, organized, rested, eaten dinner, taken more Tylenol, and practically completed an entire documentary called Waiting for the Landlord.

Somewhere in the middle of all this, Tyrone unexpectedly brought me a hotdog.

I wasn’t expecting it.

I wasn’t going to turn it down either.

By the time the landlord finally arrived, I was stretched out on the couch with a heating pad and questioning every life decision that had led me to organizing a closet while my hips were filing formal complaints.

The good news?

The walk-through went well.

The bad news?

He wants us to swiffer the ceilings.

I nearly laughed.

After everything I had accomplished, the biggest issue was dust near the ceiling.

I’ll take that as a win.

What I learned from this experience is that adapting isn’t quitting.

I didn’t do things the way I used to.

I used my walker.

I used my chair.

I took breaks.

I adjusted my expectations.

And somehow I got it done.

The biggest blessing wasn’t passing the walk-through.

The biggest blessing was realizing that I now have a system.

And because of that, I don’t plan on letting things get this overwhelming again.

One load of laundry is easier than six bags.

One jacket on a hanger is easier than a jacket colony.

And maintenance is a whole lot easier than catch-up.

Thankfully, this adventure only happens once a year.

And next year, I’ll be ready.

Hopefully with cleaner ceilings.
