H&W | Get Quiet Be Still

Health & Wellness: The Power of Sitting in the Quiet

This weekend, I spent a day doing absolutely nothing.

No writing.
No planning.
No problem-solving.

I simply sat in the quiet.

As I sat there, I realized how much I needed it.

We spend so much time talking about health and wellness. We discuss nutrition, exercise, hydration, medications, supplements, sleep, and medical care. All of those things are important.

But sometimes we overlook one of the most powerful wellness tools available to us.

Stillness.

The ability to sit quietly with ourselves.

The ability to slow our minds down.

The ability to breathe with intention and release some of the weight we have been carrying.

Stress plays a significant role in our overall health. It affects our sleep, digestion, blood pressure, energy levels, immune system, and even how our bodies respond to pain and inflammation.

Many of us carry stress without realizing how much it is affecting us.

We push through.
We keep moving.
We keep solving problems.
We keep showing up for everyone else.

Until one day we realize we are exhausted in ways that sleep alone cannot fix.

That is when it becomes important to recognize our stress triggers and learn healthy ways to manage them.

For me, one of those tools is quiet.

Not scrolling.

Not watching television.

Not listening to everyone else’s opinions.

Just quiet.

For some people, that may feel uncomfortable at first.

We live in a world filled with constant stimulation. Many people are rarely alone with their own thoughts. The silence can feel unfamiliar, even unsettling.

But I encourage you to try.

Sit on your porch.

Sit in your favorite chair.

Sit in your car before going into the house.

Watch the birds.

Watch the clouds.

Close your eyes and focus on your breathing.

Give yourself permission to be still.

You do not have to solve every problem today.

You do not have to carry every burden today.

You do not have to respond to every demand placed on you today.

Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is pause.

Take a deep breath.

Clear your mind.

Release what is weighing on your spirit.

Then move forward with greater peace, clarity, and purpose.

My belief is that learning how to sit in the quiet is a skill every person can develop and master. It costs nothing, requires no special equipment, and can be practiced almost anywhere.

Yet the benefits can be life-changing.

Sometimes the path to better health begins not with doing more, but with being still.
