Creativity and Your Health
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized something important.
Creating is good for our health.
Whether it’s writing, painting, cooking, photography, gardening, quilting, woodworking, music, coloring, or crafting, creativity gives us an opportunity to slow our minds down and focus on something that brings us joy.
I believe every one of us has a creative side.
The problem isn’t that we aren’t creative.
The problem is that life gets so busy that we forget.
Our calendars are full.
Our responsibilities never seem to end.
Our phones are constantly buzzing.
Even when we’re sitting quietly, our minds can be racing from one thought to another.
The world has become very loud.
What if we intentionally stepped away from all of that for a little while?
What if we gave ourselves permission to create something simply because it makes us feel good?
Research has shown that creative activities can reduce stress by lowering cortisol levels, improve mood by releasing feel-good chemicals like dopamine, and support brain health by stimulating memory, focus, and cognitive flexibility. Even spending just 45 minutes creating can help calm the mind and leave us feeling more relaxed.
The wonderful thing is that you don’t have to be an artist.
You don’t have to paint a masterpiece.
You don’t have to write a bestselling book.
You simply need to create.
Maybe it’s:
- Writing in a journal.
- Coloring.
- Taking photographs.
- Arranging flowers.
- Cooking a new recipe.
- Learning to crochet.
- Planting a garden.
- Building something with your hands.
- Writing your life story.
The finished project isn’t always the greatest gift.
Sometimes the greatest gift is the peace we discover while creating it.
For me, writing has become that place.
It allows me to reflect, learn, grow, and share my journey with others. While I’m writing, the noise of the world seems to fade into the background, and my mind becomes focused on something meaningful.
Maybe that’s exactly what creativity is meant to do.
It gently reminds us to slow down, breathe, and enjoy the simple act of creating.
Your creativity doesn’t have to impress anyone.
It simply has to bring peace to you.
Blessings,
Lady Flava 🌻
