How Aware Are We of Our Own Health?

Sometimes I stop and wonder how aware we really are of our own health.

It’s not like most of us walk around with a checklist every day asking ourselves how we’re doing. Life gets busy, we push through aches and tired days, and many times we don’t stop to check in with ourselves until something feels wrong.

You might actually be surprised at how many people do not have a primary care physician to turn to for health questions or concerns. When that happens, people often turn to the internet, trying to figure things out on their own.

I’ll be honest — sometimes I do the same thing. I will “play doctor” on myself and Google symptoms to see if I can figure out what might be going on. Sometimes I’m right, and other times I’m way off.

But it makes me think about something important.

As we age — especially those of us 55 and up — our bodies change. We may say “age ain’t nothing but a number,” but the truth is our bodies shift. Some things take longer to recover from. Some things we used to do easily don’t feel the same anymore.

For some people, the ability changes.

For others, the desire changes.

So let me ask the question again:

Do you really know how you are doing?

Physically.

Mentally.

Spiritually.

It matters to know.

Health awareness is the conscious attention we give to our physical, mental, and social well-being. It helps us recognize potential health risks, make healthier lifestyle choices, and identify symptoms earlier rather than ignoring them.

Awareness is not just about knowledge — it’s about action.

It may mean paying attention to nutrition, increasing movement, managing stress, or simply recognizing when something in your body feels different and needs attention.

Health awareness has also grown because of digital platforms and public health campaigns from organizations like the CDC and the World Health Organization. These efforts encourage preventive care, early detection, and better understanding of mental and physical health.

But awareness still begins with one person.

You.

Your housing, environment, education, and lifestyle all influence how you care for your health. But no matter your situation, it’s important to stop once in a while and check in with yourself.

So today, take a moment and ask yourself honestly:

How am I really doing?

Physically.

Mentally.

Spiritually.

Being aware of your health is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
