The Importance of Feeling Safe
I was laying here thinking this morning…
What does it really mean to feel safe?
Because we live in a world that is loud…
constant noise, constant information,
things always happening, always in your face.
And sometimes…
that can feel overstimulating.
Even unsafe.
But here’s the question I had to ask myself…
Is it what’s actually happening…
or how I’m experiencing it?
And the truth is…
it can be both.
Feeling safe isn’t just about what’s going on around you.
It’s also about what’s happening inside your body.
You can be in a safe place…
and still feel on edge.
And you can be in a space with noise and life around you…
and feel completely at peace.
I realized that in my own space.
I hear:
birds outside my window
a dog barking
nearby neighbors talking
music playing
even at times gunshots and sirens.
And instead of it making me feel overwhelmed…
it makes myself feel grounded.
It lets my body know…
“You’re okay.”
And that’s what safety really does.
It allows your system to settle.
Because when we don’t feel safe…
our body stays in:
stress
tension
survival mode
Always scanning.
Always on alert.
But when we feel safe?
We can:
relax connect
think clearly
just be present
So I started thinking…
If I feel unsafe…
what is the why behind it?
Is it:
something real in my environment?
or something my mind is holding onto?
And then the next question becomes…
What can I do about it?
Sometimes it’s mindset.
Shifting how we see things.
Practicing gratitude.
Grounding ourselves in the moment.
Sometimes it’s action.
Creating a space that feels calm.
Surrounding ourselves with people or environments that feel safe.
Building routines that bring stability.
And sometimes…
it’s both.
Because safety isn’t just physical.
It’s:
emotional
mental
relational
And most importantly…
it’s felt.
For me…
that feeling comes from simple things.
My tower.
My bird friends.
The quiet rhythm of life happening around me.
That’s what tells my body…
“You can rest here.”
And that matters more than we sometimes realize.
Because when you feel safe…
you don’t just survive.
You live differently.
So today…
just ask yourself:
What makes me feel safe?
And how can I create more of that in my life?
