Why Are Americans Sicker Today Than in the 60’s—When I Was Born
I’ve been thinking about this…
I was born in the 60’s.
And when I look at the world today…
Something feels off.
We have:
more disease
more mental health struggles
more suicide
more crime
more chemicals in our food, air, and environment
And yet… we’re supposed to believe we’re healthier?
It doesn’t feel that way.
Back then, life wasn’t perfect.
But it was simpler.
people:
cooked more at home
moved their bodies without thinking about it
had stronger community ties
weren’t constantly overstimulated
NOW
We are living in a world of:
ultra-processed food
chronic stress
constant noise
environmental toxins
And our bodies are responding.
Studies call it “generational health drift.”
That means each generation after the 1940s
is experiencing more chronic illness, earlier in life.
Think about that.
Earlier.
We’re seeing:
diabetes in younger people
heart disease earlier
obesity rising anxiety and
depression at levels we’ve never seen before
And yes… medicine has advanced.
We can diagnose more.
We can treat more.
But we are also living longer with illness… not necessarily healthier.
Heart disease is still the #1 killer.
Cancer follows right behind.
And then there are the silent drivers:
stress
loneliness
disconnection
substances people turn to just to cope
So I ask myself…
What changed?
We moved away from:
real food
real connection
real movement
And replaced it with:
convenience
speed
stimulation
And our bodies are paying the price.
This isn’t about fear.
This is about awareness.
Because we may not be able to change the whole system…
But we can start with ourselves.
Maybe it looks like:
choosing more whole foods
slowing down when we can
getting outside for fresh air
reconnecting with people in real ways
listening to what our body is trying to tell us
We don’t have to go back to the 60’s…
But maybe we can bring some of that simplicity forward.
Because health isn’t just about living longer.
It’s about how we live while we’re here.
