Wednesday A Taste of Flava|Patient Advocacy

Wednesday A Taste of Flava

Some moments at work stay with you.

Not because they’re loud or dramatic…

but because they mean something.

I took a call from a woman out of state.

A retired nurse.

You could hear it right away—

she understood the medical side of what she was facing…

but she was trying to line everything else up in her mind.

Not just the “what”…

but the how.

So I slowed it down.

I didn’t rush her off the phone.

I didn’t just answer one question and move on.

I walked her through what we would need to even get started—

what information matters, what steps come first.

Then I met her where she really was…

trying to picture what this would look like in real life.

So we talked it through.

What it might feel like coming into a new city.

How far the hospital is from the airport.

What that drive could look like with traffic.

Where she could stay nearby so she wouldn’t feel lost or overwhelmed.

I pointed her toward the provider she was asking about—

not just a name… but somewhere she could go and see for herself,

get a feel, build her own confidence.

It wasn’t about convincing her.

It was about making sure she had enough clarity

to make her own decision without second guessing every step.

And somewhere along the way…

you could hear the shift.

Her voice settled.

By the end of the call, she paused and said

that I helped her finalize her decision…

and that she appreciated me.

And in that moment… I didn’t feel proud.

I felt grateful.

Grateful that I could stand in that space with her for a few minutes

and make something heavy feel a little more manageable.

Sometimes we think we’re just doing our job.

But every now and then…

you realize you helped someone move from uncertainty to peace.

And that’s bigger than the call itself.

That’s the part I carry with me.
