Thursday Real Talk
It All Starts With Self
I love listening to speakers who breathe positivity into my spirit.
Shi Heng Yi is one of those wise people I find myself gravitating toward again and again. I’ve always been drawn to many aspects of Asian culture, especially the calm wisdom of its elders.
When you study many Asian traditions, you’ll notice a common thread. There is value placed on slowing down, calming the mind and spirit, and developing both internal and external discipline.
Everything starts with self.
You set the tone for how you enter your day and how you end your night.
Shi Heng Yi often talks about beginning the day with a clear mind and setting an intention before stepping into the noise of the outside world. But setting an intention is only the beginning. It also takes discipline to carry that intention with you throughout the day when distractions, stress, and negativity try to pull you away from it.
It comes down to the habits and routines we create.
We decide how we handle each day, each moment, each hour, and each experience. While we can’t control everything that happens around us, we can control how we respond to it.
What if more of us chose to enter each day this way?
I’m not saying we would always succeed. None of us will maintain perfect control over every situation. We’re human. But what if we simply committed to doing our best?
What if we chose to control our day instead of allowing the day to control us?
What if we…
- stopped and breathed,
- stopped and thought,
- stopped and considered what was needed in that moment to create the best possible outcome?
I believe we have become a society that reacts from emotion instead of responding from calm, practiced habits.
We control what we breathe life into.
Think about that for a moment.
We control that.
It’s easy to blame other people or the circumstances we find ourselves in. But what if we became so disciplined that our first response was to look inward and ask ourselves, “How do I want to handle this?”
I believe the world would become a little calmer.
There would be less noise.
Fewer distractions.
More patience.
Healthier conversations.
Stronger relationships.
I truly believe that in this season of life, one of the greatest investments we can make is learning how to do life well ourselves. Start with yourself first. Build discipline. Build peace. Build healthy habits.
From there, we are much better equipped to build healthier relationships with everyone around us.
Everything starts with self.
