Emotional Pain Trapped in the Body… and How We Begin to Release It

This one is personal.

Because I’ve known for a long time…

my body remembers things my mind has already moved past.

🌿 When the Body Remembers

I was listening to a story about a man who had been burned across his entire back 11 years ago.

Physically, his skin had healed.

But his body?

His body still remembered the fire.

The tightness across his scars wasn’t just from the skin healing…

it was also from the memory of how the injury happened.

And that made me pause.

Because I’ve known since my divorce—36 years ago…

that I carry stress in my hips.

🌿 My Truth

There is medical proof that I have arthritis in my hips.

That’s real. That’s physical.

But I also believe something else is real…

I carry emotional pain there too.

And I don’t think I’m alone.

🌿 Why the Hips?

From what I’ve learned, the hips are deeply connected to how we respond to stress.

The psoas muscle—our hip flexor—connects our spine to our legs and plays a role in the fight-or-flight response.

When we experience fear, stress, or trauma…

that muscle tightens to protect us.

And when stress becomes chronic?

That tightness stays.

🌿 The Body Holds What We Don’t Release

There’s a saying that the hips can become a “junk drawer” for emotions.

Fear.

Grief.

Stress.

Responsibility.

Especially for women.

We carry so much:

emotionally

mentally

physically

And when we don’t have the space to process it all…

the body finds a place to hold it.

🌿 Signs Your Body Is Holding On

Sometimes it shows up as:

stiffness or tightness that doesn’t fully go away

discomfort during certain movements or stretches lower back or pelvic pain

even emotional release during deep stretching

That moment when a stretch makes you want to cry?

That’s not random.

That’s something being released.

🌿 How We Begin to Let It Go

This isn’t about forcing anything.

It’s about gently creating space.

🌿 Movement

Simple things matter:

walking

standing up throughout the day

shifting your position

Even small movement helps release built-up tension.

🌿 Stretching

Hip-opening stretches like:

pigeon pose

figure-4

child’s pose

These don’t just open the body…

they can open stored emotion too.

🌿 Breathing

Deep, intentional breathing calms the nervous system.

And when the nervous system calms…

the body softens.

🌿 A Thought I’m Sitting With

I also wonder…

Do we carry pain in our hips because we are the ones who carry life?

Our pelvis… our hips…

They are strong.

They are sacred.

They are built to hold, support, and bring life into the world.

So maybe…

They also hold the weight of everything we carry emotionally too.

🌿 A Gentle Truth

Not all pain is just physical.

And not all healing is just medical.

Sometimes healing is:

awareness

movement

breath

and giving yourself permission to feel what’s been sitting quietly inside you

🌻 Closing Thought

Your body is not working against you.

It’s speaking to you.

And when you begin to listen…

that’s when real healing can begin.
