Just Be Kind
Lately, I have been thinking a lot about kindness.
Not performative kindness.
Not fake kindness.
Not kindness with strings attached.
Just genuine kindness.
The kind where you slow down long enough to recognize that everyone around you may be carrying something heavy that you cannot see.
As many of you know, I work in healthcare and spend my days speaking to people dealing with:
pain,
fear,
stress,
confusion,
frustration,
grief,
and exhaustion.
And honestly?
Sometimes healthcare workers are carrying those same emotions too.
This week reminded me once again how much kindness matters.
A calm voice matters.
Patience matters.
Feeling heard matters.
Feeling supported matters.
And kindness is not weakness.
Science actually shows that kindness has a powerful effect on both the brain and body. Acts of kindness help release oxytocin, often called the “love hormone,” which promotes connection and lowers anxiety. Kindness can also lower cortisol levels, helping reduce stress and inflammation in the body.
Even small moments matter.
A smile.
Holding the door.
Checking on someone.
Listening without interrupting.
Speaking gently.
Saying thank you.
Giving grace.
Sending encouragement.
Remaining calm when someone else is struggling.
Those moments may seem small, but they can completely shift the direction of someone’s day.
And honestly, I think people are tired right now.
The world feels heavy.
Healthcare feels heavy.
Work feels heavy.
Life feels heavy sometimes.
That is why kindness matters more than ever.
I also believe kindness includes how we treat ourselves.
Self-kindness matters too.
Resting when your body hurts.
Giving yourself grace.
Not expecting perfection.
Allowing yourself to breathe.
Taking care of your mental and physical health.
Speaking kindly to yourself instead of constantly criticizing yourself.
Kindness creates connection.
It strengthens families, friendships, workplaces, healthcare, and communities.
And sometimes the greatest thing we can do is simply make another person feel safe, seen, respected, and heard.
I know people are carrying things privately that others know nothing about.
Some are carrying pain.
Some are carrying grief.
Some are carrying loneliness.
Some are carrying anxiety.
Some are carrying financial stress.
Some are carrying silent battles.
That is why I say:
Just be kind.
Not because life is perfect.
But because life is hard enough already.
