What Is Visceral Fat and Why Does It Matter?
As I continue learning about health and wellness, I often come across terms that I have heard for years but never fully understood. One of those terms is visceral fat.
Many of us think about body fat as the fat we can see and pinch. However, there is another type of fat that is hidden deep inside the abdomen called visceral fat.
Visceral fat surrounds important organs such as the liver, pancreas, and intestines. While a small amount is normal and helps protect our organs, too much visceral fat can increase the risk of serious health problems.
According to health experts, excess visceral fat has been linked to:
• Heart disease
• Type 2 diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Stroke
• Fatty liver disease
• Chronic inflammation
What makes visceral fat different from the fat under our skin is that it is metabolically active. In simple terms, it can release substances into the body that contribute to inflammation and other health concerns.
One thing I found interesting is that you cannot necessarily see or pinch visceral fat. Someone may carry excess visceral fat even if they do not appear extremely overweight. This is one reason healthcare providers often pay attention to waist circumference and other health measurements in addition to weight alone.
The good news is that visceral fat often responds well to healthy lifestyle changes. Experts recommend:
• Regular movement and exercise
• Strength training when possible
• Eating more fiber-rich foods
• Limiting processed sugars and refined carbohydrates
• Getting enough sleep
• Maintaining a healthy weight
For me, this topic is another reminder that health is about more than a number on the scale. What is happening inside our bodies matters too.
As I continue my own wellness journey, I am learning that understanding the “why” behind our health choices can be just as important as making the choices themselves.
Have you ever heard of visceral fat before today? What is one thing you have learned about your health journey that surprised you?
