Your Brain Needs More Than Just Your Mind
The other day I listened to Dr. O talk about brain health, and it really caught my attention. Sometimes we think taking care of our brain means doing crossword puzzles, reading books, or trying to remember where we left our keys.
While those things can help, brain health actually begins with the everyday choices we make.
The more I listened, the more I realized that the same things we often hear about improving our overall health also support our brain.
- Drinking enough water.
- Eating healthy foods.
- Getting good quality sleep.
- Moving our bodies every day.
It sounds simple, but simple doesn’t mean unimportant.
Our brain is working every second of every day. It controls our thoughts, emotions, memory, balance, movement, and so much more. Just like our heart needs oxygen and our muscles need activity, our brain needs proper care to perform at its best.
Regular movement increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain, helping build new neural connections and supporting memory and learning. A healthy diet rich in vegetables, berries, nuts, fish, whole grains, and healthy fats provides nutrients that help protect brain cells from damage. Staying hydrated allows the brain to function more efficiently, while quality sleep gives it time to clear away waste products, strengthen memories, and prepare for another day.
One point that also stood out to me was the importance of staying mentally and socially engaged. Learning something new, reading, working on puzzles, having conversations, volunteering, or simply spending time with family and friends all help keep our minds active.
As many of you know, I’ve been navigating my own health challenges this year. One thing I’ve learned is that healing isn’t usually about finding one magic answer. It’s about building healthy habits that work together.
Maybe today is a good day to ask yourself:
- Have I had enough water today?
- Am I nourishing my body with healthy foods?
- Did I get enough sleep?
- Have I moved my body?
- Have I challenged my mind or connected with someone I care about?
Small choices, repeated consistently, can make a remarkable difference over time.
Your brain works hard for you every single day.
It deserves your care too.
Blessings,
