Stay The Course and Put Your Package Together

Flava1

I thought I would share some thoughts with you tonight…In the years that I have been known as Lady Flava I have met some absolutely amazing creative souls in person and online…I have experienced some of the most hardest and hurtful experience of my life in working with artists but at the same time, I have experienced some of the most blessed experiences too.  I have had to learn the hard way that the arts & entertainment industry is not necessarily an honest and sincerely arena to be apart of and is full of ones looking out for self and willing to pimp others for self gain.

But as I make it sound hard and ugly and trust and believe I have seen only the tip of the ugly in this industry,  I too have been challenged by some of the BEST in the Indie arena that has taught me, mentor me and some even have believed in me.  I call what I do, God’s Calling.  It was not a life’s dream or even a goal…When I built Flava Coffee house 10 years ago…becoming a cheerleader and an advocate for artist came natural to me and honestly I found it challenging along with being so very exciting.

I share publicly my thoughts and conversations I have with industry people to help make you think…but it is also from spending time processing my own feelings on the topics I bring forth.  I have stayed my course, even when I stop to  tweak things, needing to make it fit into what my world can provide and to keep it where I will continue to love what I do.

Always talk about the fact, you never know who is watching and better yet, who is really paying attention until that day they reach out and let you know.  I have been blessed time and time again by this experience and in so, it has opened up doors for myself and in turn, it has opened up doors for some of artists that I am involved with.

So today, I tell you and I encourage you to stay the course.  Put together your best package and be prepared to present it upon request or opportunity because you only have 1 time to make a first impression.  Push yourself to learn and grow, push yourself to be better than you were the day before.  Step outside your box and outside your comfort circle to expose yourself to the unknown to really know where you stand in the arena of the form creativity you have chosen to be apart of.

I will encourage to start today if you have not already started,  make it a priority to set aside money for your craft…the free options can only take you so far and at some point you will need money to work from to move you forward.  Take things to the next level as we talk about so frequently.

Always believe in yourself and be honest with yourself in what you create…find a neutral person to review your work/ project/ product to give you feedback on it’s relevance, quality and sell ability.  Once you step outside of yourself, you need it to be able to make it make sense to others for them to follow you, show support for you and then to dig in their pockets to show their support even further.

Do not half ass it…I saw a post that said, “if you put in half the effort be prepared for half the results.”  I see too many great talents that do not have the business part of their craft down and you need that if you want to be able to make money from your craft.  I encourage you to have your package ready and continue to update it as you evolve.

At times I felt like I have begged people to pay attention and to get involved in what I to this day still believe in, I believe in building a movement with others to take things further for artists…But in my dream and goal of building a movement, it has at time felt like I failed…but I stayed the course and in doing so it has opened up doors for me that I could never have imagined.  As I check the stats for my radio show…as of tonight, this is what is shows at 10:00pm on September 23, 2013…95,144 global listens…To me , this feels like a great achievement,  and for those artist that are played on FNRadio, that means you have had the potential to be heard by my global following.

This week takes me into an exciting time which I had not seen coming.  I am so excited to explore a partnership those higher up in the industry to gain more knowledge, hands on experience and being able to advocate for select artists to be able to take their music to the next level.  Let me just say that God is Good and doors are opening up.  I am deserving at this point in my life as I have built a known name and strong brand as a supporter of independent artist.  I have been open to absorbing all the knowledge that has been shared with me to grow into a recognized industry professional.

Stay the course…do it right…get your business package together…have a great attitude and be able to talk about who you are and what you do…be ready when the doors open to step through…and remember that you have only 1 time to make a first impression.

My Thoughts on What Might Hold Some Creative Souls From Moving to the Next Level

Success-Failure-Sign

My beginnings of cheering artists began within the walls of my business, Flava Coffee House-Seattle, WA to establishing a globally recognized personality as Lady Flava of Flava News, I try to process why artists struggle to get beyond where they are today.  One day I will write a book and include my thoughts and observations in detail but this is just a taste of what I feel holds them back.

1)     Faith that they can and are deserving.

2)     Willingness to financially invest in themselves.

3)     Not understanding they are a business.  Not having the tools in hand to conduct themselves as such when faced with a potential business connection (whatever that may look like.)

4)     Not doing the needed research.

5)     Not working as a unit, as a team with the understanding of what needs to be done and what each person involved needs to commit to for the common goal.

6)     Be personable not personal…Be comfortable in talking to people and share what you do…give them enough to draw them in, then point them in the direction for the experience of your art online and in person.

7)     Lack of respect and support from the fans that claim to believe in their talent.

8)     Targeting the wrong audience who time and time again show their lack of support.

9)     If your approach as proven to not work, have the ability to think outside the box, to find creative ways to do it different with the possibility to obtain favorable results.

10) Karma (not being right by those that support them, using people.)

11) Showing lack of appreciation.

This is just a short list of my observations and opinions…

As you can see, I have put some thought into this.  I love the passion behind the creative souls…I too ponder why I am not able to make moves like I feel I should at this point in the game.  I have people tell me all the time that they love me, believe in me.  I was once told by a business mentor figure that I need to stop supporting starving artists and seek out those with some financial means to pay for my services.  Build my success and then reach back to help those that I am really passionate about.

I believe in building together for a common goal…that numbers are more powerful than struggling in going it on your own.  Recently I was told by a East Coast colleague that the reason some people don’t join with me is because they are waiting for me to build my own success before they get involve.

As I think about who I am and what I do in support of artists, I think about the similarities that artists and small business owners have.  At what point do we get it right after years of investing time, money, energy and perfecting our craft?

Do we project our shortcomings on others or do we accept responsibility for what we lack and do something about it?

Supporting artists that are not in the mainstream spotlight is such a challenge.  I love the challenge and feeling the passion.  On my journey as an artist cheerleader and mentor, I understand there is a need for so much more that goes beyond the passion and perfecting the craft.  Some artist will get it and some will never.  Some artists are easy to support and others aren’t.

Do we live in a world of people that live off the “I” factor or the “WE” factor.  Do we really not understand that needing money to grow is really NOT a TABOO topic, it is a necessary means.

I would love to hear your thoughts as to what I shared on this blog.

ALL ARTISTS START AS AN UNKNOWN CREATIVE SOUL…It starts with them as to how far they will go…

Rajdulari Stepped onto the Leopard Carpet with Lady Flava

Rajdulari On The Leopard Carpet copy

August 20, 2013 Rajulari stepped onto the leopard carpet with me. I so looked forward to the experience and knew that it would be special. It was just that. Sitting in my online coffee house as she shared her journey as an artist, sensing her hard work and determination to get to the Grammys to the pride in being a plus size curvy woman.

For me this experience reminded me as to why I love what I do and to be just really proud to be a woman.

I invite you to take a listen to this feature and see why this show excites me still!

Are You With Me In Building Flava News Movement?

time-for-change

This week I am committing to myself to spend sometime in thought and respected conversation to see how I can set up Flava News to create win wins with Artists, Fans and Sponsors. I have established relationships around the world that are working with me, want to work with me or want to join the UTAE Movement in showcasing artists. I am committed to supporting artists and introducing fans to some new flava.

There is so much in place right now that I could make moves for Flava News and Artists if I had the money. In the past I tried to push a membership only movement charging just $1.00 per month in the beginning to moving it to $5.00 per month to help put a financial foundation under this movement to better support artists. It worked well at first and covered the expense of the radio show and then died off and life got in the way. But it felt like I was begging for support to support you instead of you seeing the strength you had to be apart of a movement. Do you honestly know if half of you or if even 1/4 of you gave a dollar every month to Flava News…what I could do. Think about it, look at what I have created with nothing. Flava News is not about me. God put me here to serve others and to find ways to support the underdogs.

I have been told time and time again that if I continue to support starving artists, I will continue to starve. Right now, Marc VanClaggett, Black Stax and Monica Monet sustain Flava News. I work hard for them and with them and in turn they provide me the means that I use to exist for you. I don’t go shopping or save towards getting a car again…I put what I earn towards keeping Flava News Alive.

It takes movement to build a movement and it takes working together to keep it existing. It is easier to destroy a movement than to build one.

I do everything by myself. Just think what I could do if I could hire someone to help. Of course someone will say get an intern that you do not have to pay. First of all, I am a control freak and if you do something for free, you really do not have to commit to me or the project. When I can pay, I establish grounds for respect with the ability to have expectations. I advocate that many artists are at the point of quality work, strong work ethics and commitment that they deserve to get paid. So I feel if I talk about it, I need to be about it.

Again, Flava News/UTAE and colleagues, we have the means to support artists around the United States to set up shows of all kinds for all art forms… what we do not have is the financial means to commit that you will walk away making what you deserve financially.  My ultimate goal is to be able to start a Flava News Grant Foundation, to help artists with the financial struggles in completing a project.

If we say that we believe in artists, we need to step up by financially supporting their products and or projects.  We need to tell our family, friends and networks about them.  We need to write reviews of our experience for them to use as marketing tools…We can make a difference for those we claim to believe in!

As Lady Flava of Flava News, I am committed to just that and have working on this since 2007.  Just think what we could do together.  As my East Coast Sister, April Sims says, “WE Are GREATER than i”

If you have, ideas on how I can be more effective with building the Flava News Movement and UTAE, I am open to hear your thoughts.

The Listenership Is Growing From Locations to Numbers

Flava News Radio

Flava News took to the air in November of 2009. At that time we did not know where it would go and never dreamed that it would become one of the biggest features that is provided by Flava News. Three and a half years later the listenership has grown over 10 X what it was in the beginning and the countries that are following has expanded to around the globe.

To date these are the TOP 10 Locations:

1. United States
2. United Kingdom
3. United Arab Emirates
4. Canada
5. France
6. India
7. Mongolia
8. Malaysia
9. Australia
10. Indonesia

I do a variety of shows from Flava Coffee House Online Radio Style to On The Leopard Carpet and New Music Leaks along with variety of other shows. All the shows are centered around supporting underground/independent artists. Although because we are talking radio, you may think that I just support musical talents, that is not true. I started in this industry as a small business owner that supported local and national artists and honestly was birth as a book reviewer of African American Literature. I encourage All Artists of All Art Forms to take advantage of Flava News and Flava News Radio but to honest the music talents are the most hungry to be heard.

My challenge in what I do it to find a balance in what I call a Win Win Relationship where we all share and show support to each other because in that would provide growth and opportunity when the power of numbers support. To this day, the fight continues to get artists and fans to understand this concept. Could I be too far off in my expectations of what is needed for the unknowns, I really don’t think so. I just think that artists are so focused on their own hustle that they fail to recognize the concept if you give support you will gain support. Plus with the fans, I am so not sure why there seems to be a block to share the news about an artist that they claim to believe and then also take a few dollars to support their projects or product.

I still fight as a one person show to spread the word and educate people on what my thoughts are in growing a true following.

Not all artists have a talent that should be put in the spot light and others just need work on their production and sometimes even personality…but I will leave this subject to a feature blog…

There is power in internet radio…this is the platform for the unknown artists because the bottomline is you are not going to be heard on mainstream radio unless you got through the right channels of numbers and money..so you best start building relationships with internet radio stations and host if you have a quality product to you want heard. Also, do your research and don’t waste your time with reaching out to a station or host that most likely will never play your sound. Be smart with your time and know who to target.

I do what I do because I believe that radio is one of the top tools for an artist to be heard around the world. I have learned that you never know who is listening and may reach out from just one radio show. It has happen numerous times to me and those people are some of my best advocates in what I do and in the growth of Flava News.

Pay attention…The world is listening to Flava News Radio!

Moinca Monet “Simply Beautiful LIVE”

Simply Beautiful LIVE by Monica Monet

http://www.themonicamonet.com

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Monica Monet through her music over the past few years…First hearing her single, “Gravity” on Paradyme’s radio show, to then having the honor of playing her on my own radio station.  Sharing her flava from her Nappy Halo CD to a few released tracks from her up and coming Simply Beautiful CD.  The feedback I have always received about playing Monica Monet’s music has always been, that my listeners love and appreciation Monica Monet’s style of perfection and expressing her heartfelt story through music and tone.

In March of 2012, I was blessed to bring Monica Monet to Seattle for a 3 day tour called

“The Love, The Hurt, The Rebirth…Pacific Northwest Simply Beautiful Tour”

Yes, Monica Monet first released her new album, “Simply Beautiful” Simply Beautiful in Seattle, WA.  Although Monica Monet experience every horrible weather conditions in Seattle upon her arrival and caught a cold…she still put on an amazing show.  And people are still talking about it and asking when and if she will be returning.

As we enter into this new year, Monica Monet puts the final touches on a new project, “Simply Beautiful LIVE” which will allow the new and old fans of Monica Monet to experience the raw passion of her live performance in audio and visual.  I have had the pleasure to experience this project before it goes public and I have to say, it is Simply Beautiful.  Maybe I am bias because I know what her studio polished sound is like to that of seeing and hearing her on stage.  But I feel that if you love this woman or have never experienced her LIVE this is the next best thing to the in person opportunity.

Monica Monet exudes passion beyond measures when you hear her sing her songs LIVE…you cannot help but understand the depths of the feeling behind the creation of the word to the music.  There are people who can sing and there are people that can write great songs but cannot put on a great show in person.  Monica Monet can sing, write great songs and is an astounding performer.  She will captivate your attention and have you singing with her before you even realize it.  Be careful she may even single you out in an audience.

Simply Beautiful LIVE is the icing on the cake when it comes to the Monica Monet Experience!  Monica Monet’s music is being played from coast to coast and around the world and has even charted in the UK for over a month at one stretch, along with being sold there.  Her presence has been experienced  from the East Coast to the West Coast and down South.  Now you can experience her LIVE from the comforts of your home.

Coming soon… Simply Beautiful LIVE by Monica Monet “Simply Beautiful LIVE.”

Forward Movement 2013

Flava NewsFor those of you that follow me, you know that I am processing and prepare for a new approach going into 2013. I will not say that this was a bad year, many blessings have come from it. My life is very different now, and I need to find a way to simplify and make it work so I am not overwhelmed and stressed. One thing I know for sure it that I was put on this earth to serve others and finally really realized that it does not mean to be taken advantage of nor to be taken for granted. I started the Flava News Movement a year ago with no regrets. I know I cannot support everyone, so it was my way of seeing who values what I bring to the table and who wants to be apart of this network. Not all have kept up with keeping me in the loop with what is going on with them, it is their loss. Not all have figure out their path and approach and I have had to take a different approach in my support. Some artists are members and get the basic support and others are clients/associates so they get more. I have heard it said time and time again that people shouldn’t have to pay for certain things, I just shake my head to that…If you feel that you shouldn’t pay, please don’t expect to get paid in return. If someone provides you a service that you value, you in turn need to help them build their empire like they are helping you build yours.

I love the ARTS and ARTISTS…my track record has proven that…Now it is time for Flava to step into the arena, I have worked hard for this and deserve this. Not all will go with me, because they do not see the value in themselves nor in me and I personally and professionally am okay with that. It’s time to step up the game. Forward Movement 2013!

We Will Be “Gifting 5 Artists” Into the Flava News Movement

We Will Be “Gifting 5 Artists” Into the Flava News Movement
