H&W|Recovering The Process

Recovery Is a Process — Honor Yourself Through It

Recovery…

is not what it used to be.

And that’s not a bad thing—

it’s just a different kind of truth.

I’m learning this in real time.

As I work on strengthening muscles that have become weak—my glutes, my hips, my hamstrings—I’m also learning that recovery isn’t just about getting stronger…

It’s about understanding what my body is telling me.

Some days I feel solid.

Other days, like today, my hips feel heavy… slower to respond… like my body is asking me to move with more care.

That doesn’t mean I’m going backwards.

It means I’m in the process.

Understanding What’s Happening

There’s a difference between:

muscle soreness from use arthritis flare from weather or inflammation and weakness that comes from not using muscles the way we once did

And sometimes… it’s all of it at once.

Cold, damp weather can settle into your joints.

Working muscles that haven’t been engaged in a while can make you sore in a new way.

So recovery becomes less about pushing through…

and more about learning how to respond.

Recovery Is Not Just Physical

Whether it’s:

illness surgery chronic conditions or simply aging

Recovery follows a similar path.

It asks for:

Awareness – noticing what your body is doing day to day Patience – not expecting overnight results Commitment – showing up even when it feels slow Adjustment – changing how you move, rest, and care for yourself

No matter what you’re recovering from…

those pieces show up every time.

Trusting the Process

There is something I’m learning in this season that matters just as much as the physical work…

Trusting the process.

Because recovery doesn’t always feel like progress.

Some days you feel stronger.

Some days your body feels heavy.

Some days you question if what you’re doing is even working.

And that’s the moment right there…

Where you either lose faith in the process…

or you lean into it.

I have learned that when I believe in what I’m doing—

when I trust that every small movement, every stretch, every intentional step is doing something…

I stay committed.

Even on the slow days.

Even on the hard days.

Because healing is happening…

even when I can’t see it yet.

Mind, Body, and Breath

Recovery is not just physical.

Meditation and breathwork are part of my process.

When my body feels off…

my mind can either make it harder… or help me through it.

Taking time to:

slow my breathing sit in stillness calm my nervous system

…helps my body respond better.

Sometimes the most powerful thing I can do for my body…

is simply breathe and be still.

Understanding Pain Management and Our Use

There is another part of recovery we don’t always talk about enough…

How we manage pain.

Many of us will need support at some point—after surgery, injury, or with chronic pain.

And there is no judgment in that.

But it is important to understand our use.

Some medications, especially opioids, can come with risks:

dependency withdrawal constipation

These are real experiences.

I took a call today from someone struggling with withdrawal…

and it was a reminder that recovery isn’t just about easing pain in the moment.

It’s about being aware of how we are managing it.

Asking questions.

Working with our care team.

Paying attention to how our body responds.

Honor Yourself Through the Process

This might be the most important part of recovery…

Honor yourself.

Honor:

the slow days the strong days the effort you’re putting in the moments you choose not to push

Because recovery is not a straight line.

It’s not perfect.

It’s not fast.

But it is yours.

And when you honor your body—

when you listen instead of fight it—

when you stay committed even when it feels slow…

That’s where real healing happens.

A Gentle Truth

If you are in a season of recovery…

Give yourself credit.

Because recovery is not just about healing…

It’s about showing up for yourself every day.

And that?

That is real strength.
